Figurative Ceramic Sculpture

I feel compelled to consider the female form. I find that each figurative piece emerges to reveal to me more information about a woman’s experience of her body in the world.

Working in clay, gives me greater intimacy and pleasure with my art form. Developing the contours of the body with my hands is an exciting process. I find myself balancing where the clay wants me to go with what my eyes want to see and my fingers want to shape.

As each figure comes alive, I try to stay connected to my inner impulses and allow myself to be pulled toward surface textures and colors. I enjoy vibrancy and dynamism and am also pulled toward delicacy and elegance.

The urge to create and recreate the female form connects with my deep need to resolve my aesthetic sensibilities, inherent as well as shaped by society, with the natural diversity in the world.
